In the evolution of the human species we are still growing and evolving. Our way of thinking about things also evolves.
Recently there have been many people who’ve stated that healthcare, shelter, water, food and jobs are not rights. This has apparently pissed a lot of people off. but technically speaking, they aren’t rights. These people that profess this opinion use the literal legal meaning of what is and is not a legal right. So, knowing this going in, it’s pointless to get upset over Neanderthals who can’t think outside their own little world to the future and how it SHOULD be.
Healthcare technically, legally, isn’t a right. But it SHOULD be. I believe everyone should have a right to access to quality healthcare. I believe it’s our duty to help our fellow human beings. If someone is sick or injured I believe it’s our duty to heal them. Especially children and the elderly who need it more than anyone.
Shelter is not a right. But should it be? Why? How?
Water is not a right. But should it be? Why? How?
Food is not a right. But should it be? Why? How?
A job is not a right. But should it be? Why? How?
These are the questions that need to be answered before we start passing laws.
I’m of the opinion that healthcare should be a right afforded every living human being on the planet. However that is not the case. Yet.
Everything else is all based on opinion. When public opinion changes then the laws will change because politicians will be forced by public opinion to change the laws or they won’t be elected.
Until then, ignorant libertarianesque assholes will step up and speak out about how healthcare isn’t a right.
Shelter, water, food and a job is not a right, and I’m not sure they all should be. Maybe shelter. Maybe water. Maybe food. But a job? Come on. Really? Should everyone have a “RIGHT” to a job? I don’t think so.
Universal Basic Income? Maybe. That might work. But it would have to be well regulated and managed. How you accomplish that I don’t know. It sounds good, but implementation is very important. Where would the money come from to pay for it?
Sadly it will take time for people’s opinions to change enough for the laws to catch up.
Anyway…the point is it’s pointless to get upset when someone says stupid shit. But technically what these people say isn’t really stupid. It is simply factual. It is cold. It is clinical and has no compassion. It lacks empathy. Sure. But it’s still factual. Healthcare, shelter, water, food and jobs are not rights.
I believe our duty is to help each other. I think that is our purpose. If there is ANYTHING purposeful about the human condition it’s to help our fellow human beings.
Being a nihilist, I don’t think there’s any built-in intrinsic purpose to humanity as whole…or human beings individually. We’re just here. We’re just another life form. There’s nothing really special about us even though some think there is. We’re part of nature, not above it. We don’t have an intrinsic purpose or an extrinsic purpose that comes from a higher power. We’re just human beings. A separate species living on a tiny little planet in the middle of nowhere.
This is not to say there is no individual or collective conscious purpose.
Our purpose is what we make it. Purpose is a choice. I choose to make that purpose about helping humanity. Being happy. Building things. Helping people. Teaching people. etc. Helping people makes me happy. It feels good to be able to help those in need. To me that is my duty. To help, to educate, to inspire others to do the same. Duty is a word attached to morality and morality is relative to the individual and public opinion. Purpose is of course attached to that. And rights are attached to that. And so on and so forth.
Point being, we’re all human beings and I believe if someone needs help, we help them. It’s really that simple.
