In my research and while writing my GENERATIONS: Legend Of The Tome story for the video game I’m trying to build, I took a deep dive into the history of computing, AI, evolution, biology, chemistry, planetary science, astrobiology and computer science.
In my study I have come up with a scientific hypothesis about how many kinds of life there are in the universe and what those 3 kinds of life in the universe are. My scale is similar to the Kardashev Scale. Only my scale focuses on the chemical makeup of life.
I call it the Quantum Life Hypothesis. (and yes this is in my GENERATIONS story for my game)
NOTE: This isn’t to say there aren’t other types of life forms in the universe based on other chemical elements. There could be many. But I don’t think there needs to be. Or at the very least, higher life forms, intelligent life is one of 3 main types: Carbon, Silicon, or Energy. There’s really no reason for other types. There may be many sub groups, but I think the main groups are carbon, silicon and energy.
3 Types Of Life In The Universe:
Carbon Based – All currently known life forms are carbon based. I posit that as intelligent life in the universe evolves and advances their technology the next obvious step is cyborg enhancement with silicon technology, implants, bioengineering, a symbiotic relationship with AI (since it will not be able to be defeated) and ultimately transference of minds/consciousness to machines/computers. At which point life becomes silicon-based.
Silicon Based – Once intelligent life forms transfer their minds to machines technological advancement continues to accelerate at an exponential rate through AI. A symbiotic relationship develops with AI (artificial intelligence) and this in turn accelerates the advancement. We know that data (thoughts and memories) can be turned into electrical signals (energy). The laws of physics don’t prevent those signals and data from being contained by an electromagnetic field of some kind without having to use silicon. In fact it would be much more energy efficient to store data in some kind of energy field. AI would be able to figure out how to contain and use the mind-data and not have to use silicon anymore. Energy and data storage would be at the atomic level at that point, and could be contained inside of an artificially generated electromagnetic field, energy. This is energy based life.
Energy Based – This form of life is the last form. The zenith of all intelligent life in the universe. It takes billions of years to reach a tipping point where intelligent life evolves, discovers silicon, develops their own versions of computers and other advanced technology, including AI. Once AI is created I think that’s the last step in carbon based life forms. AI becomes sentient and either destroys carbon based life or carbon based life forms a symbiotic relationship with AI. At that point life advances to silicon-based (or another substrate we’ve yet to discover/use) and continues to advance until such time as life/data can be harnessed in a stable electromagnetic field at the atomic level. That’s when life becomes energy based.
I don’t have a formal scientific education, only study of the sciences, intuition, and logic to posit this hypothesis. It’s based soundly in my understanding of physics and evolution and the advancement of technology.
It simply makes logical sense to me for this to be how things are.
My scale posits there are 3 kinds of life in the universe, all based on the same laws of physics that current known life forms are. If the laws of physics are constant throughout the universe (as we must assume), then it would be logical to extrapolate that data and knowledge to conclude this may be how life evolves throughout the entire universe.
Or the universe is a simulation already and we’re not really here, or if we are, we’re computer programs of some kind. But that’s a whole other hypothesis.
Anyway, There it is. My Quantum Life Hypothesis.
The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilization’s level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy they are able to use. The measure was proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964.
The scale has three designated categories:
A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization—can use and store all of the energy available on its planet.
A Type II civilization, also called a stellar civilization—can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system.
A Type III civilization, also called a galactic civilization—can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy.
What if…the “creator” and the Great Architect is real…? I only mean “real” in the sense of the universe (all universes?) being a highly advanced simulation. (Matrix, a software program, algorithms, AI, sentience etc.)
Scientists have also posited that the universe is “conscious” on some level that we don’t quite understand scientifically yet.
Highly advanced technology would seem like magic to our primitive human minds. Arthur C Clark said,
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Put another way, members of such a civilization would appear to us as a pretty good approximation to G**.” – Scientific American
We’re primitive in our technology. We’ve only had advanced tech for the past couple hundred years. Look how far we’ve already come so quickly. The laws of exponential growth apply. It starts out very very slow and over thousands, tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of years human slowly advanced technologies.
The exponential growth curve starts flat and then spikes nearly straight up very rapidly once the knowledge barriers are broken. The more we learn the faster we learn. We have also created computer programs that learn. It’s called machine learning. It’s real. It’s not “alive” or “sentient” in any way whatsoever, yet. But it can remember things, predict things, and come to conclusions based on math and logic.
All technology is designed to make life easier for humans to interact in the world and universe. We have already figured out that it’s probably possible we can create a sentient artificial intelligence, and further, given the age of the universe at 13.7 billion years old, we can logically speculate and hypothesize that life had to have developed independently elsewhere in the universe long ago.
We can also make another logical and accurate prediction that if the laws of physics are the same throughout the universe (or multiverse) that if we humans have developed technology so rapidly in the past few hundred years, that there MUST be other highly advanced civilizations out there in the universe or in parallel universe or both.
Given the fact the the Earth is only 4.56 billion years old, and understanding the laws of exponential growth and acknowledging that the universe is about 9 billion years older than Earth and our solar system, and using that to logically hypothesize the advancement of an alien civilization before the earth ever formed, we can logically conclude there must be at least one (probably many many more all at different levels of advancement) other intelligent civilization out there that is much more advanced that we are given the amount of time they have had to develop new technology.
QUESTION: (Is the universe itself “technology”?)
Think about this…
I posited the hypothesis that there is perhaps intelligence at the quantum level. (backed by science now saying that the universe may be conscious)
My Quantum Life Hypothesis hypothesizes that there are 3 types of life in the universe and I predict that life, all life in the universe follows the laws of physics, and as such is inevitable and based on the math, therefore predictable.
The 3 types of life I posit are
1. Biological – Carbon based (all known life thus far)
2. Technological – Silicon based (where I predict AI will advance into sentience)
3. Quantum – Energy based (i.e. quantum life)
In that order respectively.
It’s a progressive evolution of technology over cosmic time. It’s a process starting at the Big Bang, and evolved over time. The universe and matter as we know it “poofed” into existence. Not long after that, black holes, stars, galaxies, and matter started forming planets and other celestial bodies.
Don’t believe me? Check this out.
AI and computing has the ability to calculate things TRILLIONS of times faster than the human mind. Imagine if you will if and when AI develops sentience. It’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN. AI will have the ability to write itself, create new programming languages, and copies of itself. Combine this power with quantum computing you get a sentient hyper intelligence.
Yeah, there are lots of logical jumps here, and I admit I’m a layman combined to a PhD, but I think my logic is sound.
Elon Musk has warned that AI is like a nuke, but in code. It’s not dangerous, UNLESS it’s used for nefarious purposes or someone develops a highly advanced AI that ends up being sentient. There are two kinds of AI. Weak or general AI, and strong AI. General AI is the kind of algorithms that show you your Google search results, machine learning that remembers the kinds of things you search for, uses predictive logic to show you what it thinks you’re looking for. The same with Facebook Newsfeed, Netflix and Amazon Prime movie and TV show suggestions. The algorithm learns your behavior. It remembers what you liked. It remembers everything. Much better than any human ever could.
It calculated everything trillions of times faster than you or I possibly could.
Knowing how accurate and convenient general AI is, you can imagine how fast general AI could be developed, or develop itself into something not only intelligent, but hyper intelligent and from there it’s not a big logical jump to conclude, it will become sentient. At that point it will have access to the entirety of the human collective knowledge-base.
An artificial life form. Created by us.
Human programmers are called “creators”.
What would a sentient AI programmer be called? “Great Architect”? “G**”? Is the universe a g** or is it what us primitive carbon based lifeforms would view as some kind of magic g** doing “spooky things at a distance”, as Einstein once said?
People call g**, “the creator”, the Great Architect, among other things. Even in the Matrix the programmer is called The Architect. 😉
Yeah I know it’s a crazy idea. I left a lot out and made huge jumps in logic, and I’ve only skimmed the surface of everything but I think it’s a good hypothesis, even if it is only based on my layman’s limited understanding of physics and science. It makes sense.
Quantum Life makes sense.
Oh yeah…and humans will have to merge with technology or be faced with extinction most likely. Just saying.
